Back in February, it was reported that Joseph Habineza, Rwandan Minister of Youth and Sports, had “resigned” (I put the quotations mark because I’m pretty sure, having a Dad who’s a politician, that Habineza was fired ) from his post after some female student posted pictures online of him and several females involved in compromising situations. At first I thought the minister was engaging in a threesome that was captured in pictures which got me all worked up because that would be unheard of in Africa (not the threesome…I’m sure there are plenty of those even in Africa. But the fact that African politicians can now get in trouble via pictures). So here I am surfing the web to find those “scandalous” pictures, and when I finally find them I’m…underwhelmed.
Yes, it is indeed the minister on the pictures with five women but they aren’t engaged in anything sexual. Maybe I was expecting a sleazy story the likes of Tiger Wood and his harem of hookers and porn stars, but, Habineza’s pictures certainly don’t suggest anything so pervert. On picture 1, he seems to be slow-dancing with a young woman wearing a short champagne dress. The only thing that might be slightly shocking is her dress’s plunging back that shows a peep of her black bra (just a fashion no-no in my opinion). To be honest, I don’t even find that dress sexy! Another picture that one blogger has captioned “The minister, the youth and no sport just romance” shows the minister sitting on a couch surrounded by five young and cute women (notice I didn’t say sexy). The caption would be really clever if there was some romance going on. I don’t deny that there’s definitely some flirtation happening like on picture 3 where the minister is posing with two of the women with his hand clearly touching the champagne dressed girl’s ass. Or on picture 4,where he’s dancing with a woman whose sticking her butt out while wearing a brown, knee-length, polka-dots dress that I could very well see on my 53 year-old mother (please note that I’m not trying to make fun of the women but just show how so not slut-like they appear).
All in all, I wasn’t that shocked by those pictures! Maybe I’ve been desensitized by all the sex scandals in the States that are more hardcore. In fact, compared to sex scandal of the likes of former New York Governor,Eliot Spitzer, who spent more than $15,000 at an escort service, or former presidential candidate John Edwards’ sex tape with mistress Rielle Hunter, Habineza’s pictures might seem like watered down wine. But it was, obviously, a big deal in Rwanda. And I was reminded of how sex (or in this case the illusion of it) is still so taboo back home!
